(15 June) - The Ukrainian American Sport Center in Horsham, Pennsylvania will be the site for Region I Cup Finals this weekend. It kicks off with the Men's Under-23 Tournament on Saturday among nine teams in the region followed by the finals on Sunday for the Werner Fricker Open Cup, the US Amateur Cup and the Gerhard Mengel Over-30 Cup. The winners of these three competitions will advance to play for the national titles.
The regional qualifiers started in April and five sides have worked their way to the finals with one reaching two of them. Champions from nine state associations/regional leagues competed in the qualifying rounds throughout the region.
The first final on Sunday will feature FC Motown of New Jersey against Christos FC of Maryland for the Werner Fricker Open Cup. Eight state association champions took part in this US Soccer tradition that dates back to 1913. Motown took the northern division with victories over Everton Westchester (ENY) in the quarterfinals and Kendall Wanderers (MA) in the semifinals. Christos defeated FC Yemen (WNY) and then Phoenix SC (EPA) to reach the final. The Werner Fricker Open Cup recognizes the top adult amateur side in the open competition. The final is set for 11:00. The winner will face Obllic Legends (IL) of Region II for the cup title.
We had six champions from our member state associations compete for the Gerhard Mengel Over-30 Cup, which will be our second final of the day. Safira Soccer of Massachusetts worked its way to the title match beating NY Dinamo (ENY) and then Danbury United (CT). Their opponent will be southern division finalist Phoenix SC who advanced defeating Christos FC (MD) and then United SC (MDCVA). The championship match will be at 1:30 and it is likely both teams will take part in the national finals with Region II winner Carpathia Kickers (MI) and CD Motagua (LA) of Region III winning their regions.
Our last final of the day will be at 4:00 for the US Amateur Cup between Lansdowne Bhoys of Eastern New York against Christos FC of Maryland, who will play their second title match. Lansdowne started against Newtown Pride FC (CT) in the quarterfinals and then beat Southie FC (MA) in the semifinals to make their way to Horsham. Christos has a bit of a longer route with a first round draw against Jersey Shore Boca (NJ), then a quarterfinal victory over Dulles Cannons (MDCVA) followed with their win over Phoenix SC (EPA). There were nine state association/regional league champions that fought through the qualifiers for the Amateur Cup. The national finals will feature Region II champion Bavarians FC (WI), Legends FC (NTX) and the Region IV winner to be determined this weekend.
The Region will host the tournament for our U23 teams with group play on Saturday and the semifinals and final on Sunday. Nine teams will take part and all of the games are scheduled to be played at the Ukrainian American Sport Center. The final is set for 2:00 to determine the 2016 Region I Champion.
