(26 April) We got the quarterfinals played out in the Werner Fricker Cup this past weekend, our open competition. Defending champion Christos FC of Maryland needed extra time in a tough battle against Junior Lone Star of Eastern Pennsylvania. Lone Star took the lead in the 30th minute with a goal from Anthony Allison. Levi Houapeu drew it even before halftime. Both players ended up exchanging goals in the second half with the match ending 2:2 in regulation time. In the second part of extra time, Chris Wilson hit a bomb from about 30 yards out to send Christos to the semifinal. The opponent will be the Clarence Coyotes of Western New York. In a poised defensive effort, the Yotes went through with a well-executed goal in the 73rd minute by J.J. Hughes to shutout Hammers FC of Metro-DC Virginia 1:0.
Kendall Wanderers FC of Massachusetts had a difficult time against the Lansdowne Bhoys FC of Eastern New York in a 3:0 loss. Ovan Oakley scored the game winner for the Bhoys in the 20th minute. Sikele Sylvester and Glen Reid notched it up in the second half for the final result. FC Motown of New Jersey will be the semifinal challenger after a 5:1 thumping of FSA Inter of Connecticut. Emerson Lawrence led Motown with a hat trick. The semifinals are set for 14 May.
Next on the Region I plate is the Gerhard Mengel Cup to determine the over-30 championship. In a replay from last season, defending champion Phoenix SC of Eastern Pennsylvania head down to Baltimore to meet Christos FC of Maryland. The winner will host the semifinal against United SC of Metro DC-Virginia on 21 May. The other two quarterfinal games feature Danbury United of Connecticut hosting Kel Kau of Massachusetts and Brick Lions FC of New Jersey traveling the Turnpike to play the NY Greek Americans of Eastern New York.
