(2 May) We concluded the month of April of our cup qualifiers with the quarterfinal rounds of the Gerhard Mengel Cup, the Over-30 Championship. In a rematch from the previous season, Christos FC of Maryland were able to reverse the result and send home last year's champion Phoenix SC of Eastern Pennsylvania. Lucio Gonzaga gave Christos an early lead by converting a penalty. On the opposite end, Stephen Saunders maintained the lead at the end of the half with his save of a penalty kick by Phoenix. The second half saw the Philly side even the match and it ended 1:1 in regulation. In the first extra time period, Louie Karko set up Ryan Russell for the game winner while Yaikel Perez put in a brace on both ends of extra time to seal the victory 4:1. Christos will host United SC of Metro DC-Virginia in the semifinal this month. In the northern bracket, NY Greek American defeated Brick Lions FC of New Jersey 3:1 with goals from Vincenzo Conigliaro and Mauricio Turizo. The third was an own goal. The Greek American will meet Danbury United of Connecticut in the semifinal after their 4:2 victory over Kel Kau of Massachusetts.
May means semifinals and the first on the agenda will be the US Amateur Cup. Saturday evening, Lansdowne Bhoys of Eastern New York will have Bricks Lions FC of New Jersey visiting Tibbets Brook Park at 8:00. On Sunday, Junior Lone Star of Eastern Pennsylvania head northwest to take on the Rochester River Dogz Reserves of Western New York at Roberts Wesleyan College Turf Field, 2:00.
